Things that will be fun momentarily, but won't help us get to where we want to be. Remind us we can rest, God. We can take a moment to rest on this journey, but keep us focused on what's to come. Give us just a hint of what we can be so we can keep following. Keep us moving forward, for we know it can be hard to get back on the path once we've left it. Help us look ahead of ourselves. Keep our eyes on the path. Help us ignore the other voices that call our name. We know who we are, and we know whose we are. Help us to act like it, God. Amen.

Most Fridays at Whirlwind, we do a little something called The Impossible Shot, in which a few students are invited to stand in the front of the Loft and shoot a Finger Rocket, trying to hit a target in the balcony of the Loft. In the four years that we've been doing this, no one has ever succeeded... until last Friday when Sammie, an 8th grade girl, hit the impossible shot. Needless to say there was much rejoicing! We will now need to rename this challenge The Improbable Shot.

GOD, you are important. You are the most important. But we have a tendency to put things ahead of you. We love money, we love stuff, and we seem to pray to anything that will make our piles of stuff bigger. Help us get it straight, God. You build us from the inside out, not the outside in. Teach us to be satisfied with what we have and who we are instead of constantly desiring more and better. We will give glory to you and not to the television billionaire. We will sing our praises to you and not to the one in the spotlight. We will tank you for all you have given us and not the Internet. Winter Meltdown 2012

The Meltdown is coming…

Winter Meltdown at River Valley Ranch is a winter retreat weekend for Middle School students. It is a time to escape from the distractions of everyday life and reconnect with God and friends. Challenge yourself, go a little crazy, go horseback riding or paint the snow (and your friends) with paintballs, cruise down the 1700’ triple zipline, battle for honor in the Dodgeball Tournament, or just relax around a fire and spend time with friends.

Friday, February 10 to Sunday, February 12

at River Valley Ranch.

The cost is $130, which includes lodging, food, program and activity costs. Scholarships are available! Don’t let finances be the reason you miss out on this experience.

Also, if you would be willing to contribute to the scholarship fund so more students and leaders can take advantage of this opportunity, please contact the Student Ministry Office.

Last Friday at Whirlwind, instead of a big, blowout Christmas party, we turned our attention outward to serve others...

Middle schoolers invited parents to leave their younger kids with us so they could get a much needed night out. We collected donations and raised enough money to provide...

Christmas parties for 14 rescued child soldiers in Southeast Asia
A year's worth of school books for rescued child soldiers
Warm clothes for rescued child soldiers.
A mission trip scholarship for Acts4Youth students.

A group of middle schoolers also went Christmas caroling around the Rodgers Forge neighborhood and collected 13 bags of canned goods for ACTC.

The eighth grade girls made approximately 28 dozen Christmas cookies that were dropped off for Moveable Feast.

On top of all that, they had a lot of fun!

Given what we’ve been exploring in our recent Whirlwind series on Justice, we’re going to celebrate Christmas a little bit differently…

This year, we will have an opportunity to express our gratitude for all we’ve been blessed with by taking time to serve others.

Here’s how we’ll be serving together on Friday, December 16th...

Caroling and Canned Goods

Some students and leaders will go together around the Rodgers Forge neighborhood to sing Christmas carols and collect canned goods for the ACTC (www.actconline.info).

Carolers should arrive at 7 pm dressed warmly. Also bring a flashlight!

Babysitting

Other students and leaders will provide babysitting for a small donation so Mom’s and Dad’s can get a night out. Funds raised will go to provide a Christmas party for rescued child soldiers in Southeast Asia (www.divineinheritance.com).

Babysitters should come a little before 6 pm.

Making Cookies

The eighth grade girls will be baking Christmas cookies in the church kitchen to provide desserts for Moveable Feast (www.mfeast.org).

Bakers should come at 7 pm.

At 9:00, all the groups will come together to share and continue celebrating until we’re done at 9:30 pm. If you have any questions, feel free to email macton@centralpc.org.

This Friday is Breakout Night. Instead of the regular Whirlwind program, each Breakout Group will have their own event.

Here's the plan for each group...

6th Grade Girls
The 6th Grade Girls will be spending some time at the home of one of their leaders, Stacey Parson. They will be meeting there (801 Streambank Court, Towson, MD 21286) for pizza, ice cream, swimming in the (heated) pool, and general merriment. If you have any questions, feel free to email Stacey Parson or Katy Annis.

6th Grade Guys
The 6th grade guys will will be having pizza and watching a movie and playing wii games at the Dininno House (411 Donegal Drive, Baltimore, MD 21286, 410-825-2747).If you have any questions, feel free to email Austin Brose.
7th Grade Girls
The 7th grade girls will be going to see the movie Courageous at AMC Loews in White Marsh. They should meet at the church at 6:30 and will return back at the church at 10:15. Tickets are $10.50. There will be some cheaper tickets ($7.50), but you need to email Sandy by Thursday night to confirm you will be there. If you would like to join the group for the movie and help drive, please contact Sandy. For any other questions, email Sandy Pilotte.

7th Grade Guys
The 7th grade guys will be meeting in the Loft at Central Presbyterian Church on Friday for games (nerf battle and dodgeball), pizza, and, a movie (Thor). They will be meeting from 6 to 9:30. Students should bring nerf guns if they have them and $5 for pizza and drinks. Check out this link for more details on the movie. 8th Grade Girls
The 8th grade girls will be meeting at Susan Schulze’s house (11 Maryland Avenue, Towson, MD 21286) from 6:30 – 10:30. They will eat pizza then cook a meal for Heaven’s Kitchen an AIDS ministry. Please bring $3 - $5 to help purchase groceries for the meal. Bring a favorite snack or drink to share while we play games after cooking. Please RSVP to Susan Schulze or Brenda Ames-Ledbetter so they know how much pizza we need.

8th Grade Guys
The 8th grade guys will be getting lost in a 6-acre corn maze at Beachmont Camp in Kingsville, MD. They should meet at the church at 6:30 pm and bring $8 for the maze, money for concessions, and a flashlight. We’ll return to the church at 9:30 pm. GOD, we sit next to a glass of cool water, and we live our lives thirsty and dry. We stand just outside the shade, complain about the heat - when all we need is in front of us. All we need is within our reach, and we ignore it. Sometimes it's easier to complain than receive what you freely offer us. Help us take our minds off ourselves, God. Help us focus on you, and then we will see that you've already given us everything we need. IT ALL STARTS AGAIN, GOD. We remember when we were kids, and we approached the first day of school with joy. Now we're not so sure. We look forward to seeing our friends. The summer can get boring. We also stand here a bit uneasy. This year will be harder than the last. This year we are different people than we were last year. Let this year be amazing, God. We don't ask that it be easy. We ask that it be amazing. If we always walked the easy path, we would miss the wondrous beauty that goes with climbing over the mountain. Don't let us be alone. Even when we screw up royally, don't let us be alone. It's almost here. Walk with us now the way we used to walk to the first day of school with our parents... hand in hand. Be with us, God.

Some important details concerning the OTE Mission Trip that leaves this Sunday, July 24th!

We'll be meeting under the Pavilion at Central Presbyterian Church. Try to arrive between 10:30 and 10:45 so we can leave at 11 am!

Do not bring cell phones, mp3 players, or portable gaming systems on the trip!

If you have not already turned them in, please bring your Service Hour Forms and signed Team Covenant.

Make sure you have money for lunch on the way up. There may be an opportunity to purchase something at the Ligonier Camp store (T-shirts, snacks, or other souvenir). If you are interested, you may want to bring money.

Regarding snacks... snacks are great for the ride up. Any snacks you bring, you should expect to share with others. However, we do not want to share them with woodland creatures. Because we are staying in cabins in the woods, snacks may attract unwanted animals. Snacks will be kept in vehicles and students may have limited access to them during the week.

We anticipate returning on Friday, July 29th around 6 pm.

We'll provide the Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and Veggie Burgers. 6th grade families bring drinks to share. 7th grade families bring a side dish to share. 8th grade families bring desserts to share.

ALL-SEEING God, you have this worked out, right? See, it's a little scary down here sometimes. people expect a whole lot out of us. They want answers to questions about where we are headed, when we haven't even thought about it yet. They want to know who and when and where and what about the rest of our lives - and we still have 60 or more years to go. We need to hear from you on this one, God. We need to know your plan - or at least, we need to know if the plans we're thinking about are possible. Help us find something to say to those who won't stop asking questions. Then help us answer our own questions. Who are we? What are we doing? Where are we going? Can you help us with these, God? Amen.

Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. They are our protection in this world. We will carry them all our lives. Help us to learn from them well. Our daily lives here shouldn't be taken lightly. Each day we venture out, we must be prepared. Help us to teach your Word to our children. Better yet, help us to live your Word so that our children may learn from us. We will pray long and hard. We will pray for our families and friends. We will pray for our leaders and our world. We will live each day honored to be children of God. Amen.

A Prayer concerning Homework

GOD, what moron came up with the concept of homework? Half the time it's just busy work. Half the time it's the things teachers didn't plan well enough to say in class. Why do they do this? We're so bogged down. If we fell into the pool with all the homework we have, it would pull us to the bottom. Is this "wealth of knowledge" really something we need? Is the world we're to inherit really so bloodthirsty that it has to teach how to stay awake half the night doing math problems or writing essays? We have a lot of fears, God. Homework is just a mild irritation compared to some of the things we have to go through. You are the creator of the universe. You are the beginning and the end. Could you just give us a small hint of what we could be, so that we can keep going? Enrich us. Support us. Renew us. Give us a light in the distance so we can keep slogging through this mud. Amen.

FATHER GOD, help us never forget that Jesus knew his time was coming. The rest of us pass blissfully through life knowing we will die "someday." Jesus knew the time was near, yet he continued to show love and faith. He continually put himself on the line, when most of us would have run away in fear. God, during this time of Lent, give us just one small taste of what it must have been like for him. Help us appreciate the great love your Son had for us - a love that kept him living for others, even when he knew he was going to die. Amen.

Breakout Night 2

6th Grade Girls will be eating pizza and making jewelry at the church from 7 to 9 pm. Girls need to bring $10 to cover the cost of supplies.

6th Grade Guys will be having a bonfire. The guys should meet at the church at 6:30 to ride over the the bonfire site. Students will be return to church at 9:30 to be picked up.

7th and 8th Grade Girls going on the Revolve Tour should meet at 6:00 pm at the church.

7th and 8th Grade Girls NOT going on the Revolve Tour are invited to a pizza and game night at Deb Dininno’s house (411 Donegal Drive, Baltimore, MD 21286) from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Girls should bring $5 and their favorite pizza topping.

7th Grade Guys will be destroying each other with nerf weaponry at the church from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. In between the chaos, there will be some snacking. Guys should bring any nerf weapons they may have.

8th Grade Guys will be having a movie night at Regal Cinema in Hunt Valley. They will be going to the 7:10 showing of Rango. Guys should check in with Chad so he knows who is going.

GOD, sometimes it just doesn't make sense. We live in a world that says, "Look out for number one," and yet you tell us to think of others. The world tells us to buy more, and you tell us to give it away. Following you makes us foolish in the world's eyes. But it's not the world's opinion that we care about. To the world we are weak, but in your eyes we are strong. There is joy in our obedience to you. If we follow your path, you'll be there at the end of it. If we stray from the path, we'll get caught in the briar and brambles. An when we find our way back to you, we're bruised, tired, and hungry. Then we wonder what was so important that we left the path for it in the first place. Help us keep our eyes on our destination. Light your heavenly home so that we won't be distracted by something shiny off the beaten path. Amen.

GOD, we've seen the Sunday school books and the children's Bibles and the movies. We all hold an image of you in our minds whether we talk about it or not. Help us remember we cannot really know what you are. Our senses limit us. Our understanding is incomplete. Someday when we leave this earth and dance with the angels, we will touch your face and see how off base we've been all these years. In the meantime, give us new images of you, and inspire our old ones so we can keep learning, keep growing, keep loving. We are a people that needs to see, touch, taste, smell, and hear. This is how we have to work in order to understand. Forgive us for limiting you, God, but it's all we can do right now. Someday, show us your face. Amen.
